Calcium is Particularly Important for Your Child Growing bodies need good nutrition for optimal health. Through adolescence all body systems are developing and depend on vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to supply necessary building blocks. A deficiency of one nutrient can lead to life long consequences. Calcium is a particularly important mineral for children.
Calcium is one of the most abundant minerals in the body. During childhood and adolescence calcium is used to build strong bones and teeth. Additionally calcium is an important factor in proper muscle contraction, the transmission of messages through nerves, and the release of hormones. Getting sufficient levels of calcium during these formative years is important for several reasons. First, getting sufficient calcium during the pre-adolescent years can reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis later in life. Secondly, if the amount of calcium taken in is too little the body will pull calcium from the bones to support proper cell function resulting in weaker bones. The Typical Child Does Not Get Enough Calcium Children’s diets today often lack adequate calcium. Milk is a prime source for calcium. Children ages 1-3 need about two glasses of milk each day, while children 4-8 years old need three about three glasses and 9-18 ears old, four glasses. For children who will not or cannot drink milk other food sources include broccoli, oatmeal, and fortified orange juice. Still, many kids are picky eaters and do not get enough calcium. In addition, high levels of caffeine and phosphates in soda can further deplete calcium.
